We Need Your Input!
Help direct our energy by sharing your stories:
Please help Sylvia's friends plan the best way to continue to honor her life -- and create some positive result from her tragic death -- by leaving a comment to this post on what you hope for in the future of cycling in Cleveland. Feel free post a story about a cycling experience you've had that could have benefited from new project or policy to make cycling safer and more enjoyable in Cleveland.
Momentum has been growing recently -- even before Sylvia's tragic accident -- among local bike-advocacy, sustainability, livability, and environmental groups for making changes to make Cleveland more "bicycle friendly." Your input here will help Sylvia's friends plan the October 17th event in her memory and direct that momentum toward meaningful policies to make cycling safer and easier here.

i had a conversation with a friend a couple of weeks ago, I bike somewhat often, she has never been a bike rider. I was sharing some of my thoughts on the laws of bike safety and how I've never been comfortable biking at high car traffic times. She had no idea that the laws allowed/required bicycles to be in traffic on streets, and commented that whenever a cyclist is in front of her car she becomes annoyed and wonders why they would not move over/get out of the way.
It seems to me that a lot of car drivers in and around Cleveland are ignorant to bicycle laws and protocol, and this is a scary thing for all of us on bicycles. I think an effective educational effort aimed at the car driving public would be important, many, many drivers pay no mind to signs encouraging them to share the road with bicycles.
Please continue to honor Sylvia, and join cyclists worldwide, for the 2010 Ride of Silence, in honoring our friends and family who are no longer here to ride with us, while raising global awareness of cyclist's rights to the road, the need for motorists and cyclists to Share the Road, and to practice safe cycling.
Join cyclists in the northern hemisphere on Wed. May 19, at 7:00 PM, or cyclists in the southern hemisphere on Sat. May 22, at 10:00 AM.
If anyone would like additional information about the Ride of Silence, or how to organize one, PLEASE feel free to contact me.
