Memorial Ride

In mourning, memory, celebration, and honor of Sylvia's passing and love of bicycling we will ride silently through the streets of Cleveland.

Details are as follows: Meet at Sylvia's Tremont home at the intersection of Fairfield and West 11th at 7:30 AM. The ride will begin at 8:00 on Tuesday, September 22nd--on the 1 week anniversary of Sylvia's accident. We will have a limited number of white "I RIDE FOR SYLVIA" T-shirts available for a goodwill donation. Please wear white shirts. Helmets are required, and loaners will be available at the site if you don't have your own.

This will be a silent procession beginning at Sylvia's home, following her ride to work at Hard Hatted Women, then coming back through Ohio City. This is a ride solely to honor Sylvia, at which we will announce plans for a more generally accessible cycling event on a weekend in the near future. We hope you will join us.

Here is the starting location.

For those of you who may not yet have heard about Sylvia's accident, you can read about it here.

As a fellow VISTA, I met Sylvia only recently, but her passion for her work and her dynamic personality shined clear. I have thought a lot about her in this last week. My prayers and condolences go out to her family, friends, and coworkers. I Ride For a More Just World.

I was honored to be with Sylvia's parents and friends the other night - a beautiful, good, true togetherness. I wrote this after:

Fire-wind sparkling upward;
Sylvia inspires songs of love and light.
New moon – open skies tonight.

I wish I had met Sylvia. It sounds like she was such a compassionate and beautiful soul - the kind of person our world desperately needs more of.

I just heard about Ghost Bikes -they are memorials for cyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel.

This seems like such a perfectly fitting tribute to her. Here is the website: http://www.ghostbikes.org/
